Masked Owl Tyto novaehollandiae
Characteristics in Captivity
Not nearly as common as the Barn Owl. I liken these guys to over-sized Barn Owls, but they do seem to be less shy. Given the size of their feet, this isn't surprising. They seem to settle in fairly well, as long as they can have some privacy.
Masked owls are very powerful, and can take small rabbits. They also hunt roosting birds. Their eyes are larger than the Barn Owl's which may indicate they use sight more, but their hearing is also exceptional. They can locate a sound and pounce without needing to see the prey.
Mice and day old chicks are fine, though larger items, including birds, are appreciated.
